There are many email spam programs that will search the internet newsgroups gathering the email addresses of their unwilling targets. Newsgroup participants typically use one of the conventions below to avoid ending up on numerous spam lists:
| Fake email in the "from:" field: | ex: see_message_body@domain.com The real address may be added to the signature block as most of the email gathering programs don't bother searching the message body |
| Prefixing the email address: | ex: NOCANSPAM_realuser@domain.com or
NOSPAM_realuser@domain.com Instructions to remove the prefix may be added to the message body or the signature block. |
| Changing the characters in the address: | ex: realuserATdomainDOTcom Instructions to replace with real characters may be added to the message body or the signature block. |
