PFC was built on Service Based Architecture. Before jumping into PFC you should be familiar with the topics of SBA. A very good white paper on this topic is available from http://www.concentric.net/~Bgcastle/PAPERS/SBA/SBA_Down.shtml.
The bad news is that PFC learning curve may be steep. The good news is that it's gradual. In contrast to many other class libraries, you don't need to know every detail to be able to start using it. After getting familiar with some of the base concepts each service can be learned on "as needed" basis.
