PFC architects are among some of the brightest Powerbuilder developers. This statement may be questioned by some. PowerBuilder is a mature product and so are many of the developers using Powerbuilder. To say that some are better than others may not be accurate. In fact some of the more experienced developers may have their own ideas on specific architecture and implementation techniques. If you are an experienced developer, shying away from PFC consider that most of the time you are not working alone. Examine the other reasons to use PFC and you may decide to swallow your pride and accept a different approach.
PFC development team has an insight into the features of the next PB release long before anyone else outside of Powersoft. Often their input influences the features of the next PB release. This was the case with autoinstantiated NVOs.
PFC is tested by Sybase and by 1000's of end users.
PFC provides a "neutral" set of standards. Political atmosphere in many companies is a major roadblock to the company standards. Often attempts to set development standards fail due to the "Who are you to tell me how to code" syndrome. In some organizations it is even impossible to agree on who will be responsible for setting standards.
PFC is well documented with a growing list of web resources and books. When was the last time a consultant writing an in-house framework has provided a complete manual and a few 500 page books?
Powersoft offers Instructor lead classes and Computer Based Training. Third party training and seminars are also available.
You can get paid support from Sybase and free support on the PFC newsgroup or on PFC and PB mailing lists .
Products like Appmodeler can generate a PFC application based on an object or a data model. You will have to invest additional development resources to get the same features with a custom framework.
It is pretty easy to find developers with PFC experience who can become proficient on your project with minimum ramp-on time. Judging by the traffic on this web-site there should be no shortage of qualified PFC developers :-)
